EV Charger Installation on the Central Coast, A Proper Home Charger, Wired to Last

Charging off the cable that came with the car works, but it's slow and leans on a circuit that was never built for it. A dedicated wall charger fills the car overnight and takes the strain off your wiring. We install them right across the Coast, on their own circuit, hardwired to AS/NZS 3000.

02 About Us

Central Coast Electricians Who Know EV Charging

Zen is a licensed Central Coast electrical team, owned and run by Hannes. EV charging is electrical work first and a charger second, a high-current circuit, the right protection, and a switchboard that can carry it. That's our trade, and it's why a charger we install is one you won't think about again.

With over 10 years on the tools across the Coast, we've wired chargers into everything from new garages to forty-year-old fibro homes with tired boards. We'll tell you straight what your place needs, a simple single-phase unit, a board upgrade first, or three-phase if you've got it, and quote it properly before we start.

EV Charging, Your Questions Answered

Do I need a licensed electrician to install an EV charger in NSW?

Yes. Installing a home EV charger means running a dedicated high-current circuit from your switchboard and connecting a hardwired appliance, that's electrical work, and in NSW it must be done by a licensed electrician. It isn't a DIY job, and doing it without a licence can void your insurance and create a real safety risk. We're fully licensed and provide a certificate of compliance for the work.

Why not just use the cable that came with my car?

The portable cable that plugs into a normal powerpoint will charge a car, but slowly, often well over a day for a full charge, and it draws a sustained high load through a circuit that was never designed for it. A dedicated wall charger on its own circuit charges far faster and is the safer long-term setup. It's what every EV maker recommends.

How fast will a home charger fill my car?

Most homes run a 7kW single-phase charger, which tops up the average EV comfortably overnight from empty. The exact speed depends on what your car can accept and the charger you choose. If you have three-phase power and a compatible car, you can charge significantly faster. We'll match the charger to your supply so you're not paying for speed you can't use.

Can I charge faster with three-phase power?

Yes, if your property has a three-phase supply and your car supports it, a three-phase charger can deliver up to around 22kW, well beyond single-phase. Not every home has three-phase, and not every EV accepts the full rate, so it's worth checking both before deciding. We confirm your supply and your vehicle's limit and recommend accordingly.

Will my switchboard need an upgrade first?

Sometimes. A charger is a large, steady load, so your board needs a spare circuit position and the right protection. Older boards with ceramic fuses, or homes already running close to capacity, often need a dedicated breaker and RCD added, occasionally a full upgrade. We check the board when we quote so there are no surprises.

Where can the charger be installed?

Usually wherever you park, inside the garage, on an external wall near the carport, or by the driveway. The ideal spot keeps the cable run from the switchboard sensible and puts the charger within easy reach of the car's port. We route the circuit neatly through the roof space, wall cavities, or external conduit depending on your home's layout.

Can the charger go outside?

Yes. Chargers rated for outdoor installation are weatherproof and built for Australian conditions, so a carport or external wall is fine. We make sure the unit is rated for its location and mounted so it's protected from the worst of the weather while staying easy to use.

Which charger brand should I get?

It depends on your car, your home, and whether you want smart features. Tesla owners often pick the Wall Connector; others choose smart units like Zappi, Ocular or Wallbox for app control, scheduling and load management. We install all the major brands and will give you an honest steer rather than pushing one product.

What is a smart charger, and do I need one?

A smart charger connects to an app so you can schedule charging, track usage, and, importantly, manage load so the charger eases off when other big appliances are running. That last feature can avoid a switchboard upgrade in some homes. They cost a little more than a basic unit, and we'll tell you whether the features are worth it for you.

Can I charge my EV from my solar panels?

Yes, and it's one of the best ways to cut running costs. A solar-aware charger can prioritise the power your roof makes through the day rather than exporting it for a low feed-in tariff. Pair it with a home battery and you can charge from stored solar after dark. We configure the charger to work with your existing system.

Do you install chargers for businesses and workplaces?

Yes. We handle commercial and workplace charging, fleet depots, staff and customer parking, strata and destination sites, including the load management and metering a multi-bay setup needs. Commercial jobs are scoped to your site's supply and how the bays will be used, and quoted individually.

Can you install a charger in an apartment or strata car space?

Often, yes, though strata adds a few steps, you'll usually need owners' corporation approval, and metering so your charging is billed to you rather than common power. We've worked through strata installs and can talk you through what your building will likely require before you commit.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. We hold a current NSW electrical contractor licence and carry full public liability insurance, and we're SAA accredited for solar and EV work. You can verify any NSW electrical licence on the NSW Fair Trading website, and we're happy to show our credentials on request.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes, free, no-obligation quotes for EV charger installation across the Central Coast. For many homes we can give you a good idea from a few photos of your switchboard and where you park, sent through the chat or enquiry form. For trickier jobs or commercial sites we'll arrange a site visit and provide a fixed written quote.

What areas do you cover?

We're based on the Central Coast and install across the whole region, all areas of the Central Coast and everywhere between. Because EV charger demand is regional rather than tied to one suburb, we treat the whole Coast as our patch.

What's involved in getting a charger installed?

Start by getting in touch through the chat or enquiry form with your car and a couple of photos of your switchboard and parking. We'll quote, remotely where we can, on site where needed. Once you're happy, we book a time, run the dedicated circuit, mount and commission the charger, and hand over the compliance certificate. Most home installs are a single visit.
